Information for Fall 2024 Transfer Students

Transfer of Credit

A student may transfer a maximum of 31 credits from a previous law school. There are no exceptions to this rule. A grade of C- or better (under the previous school’s grading system) must have been earned in a course in order to transfer the credit hours to our law school. To receive credit for coursework where a non-letter grade (e.g., Pass "P") is recorded, the incoming student is responsible for demonstrating that the non-letter grade meets the C- or better standard. All transferred hours will be reflected as grades of Transfer Credit (“TR”) on the GW Law Transcript. Transferred credits will have no effect on your GW Law grade point average.

The required first-year curriculum at GW Law includes the following courses: Contracts, Torts, Property, Legislation and Regulation, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law I, and Fundamentals of Lawyering I and II. A transfer student who has not completed one or more of these courses at their prior law school must complete any required course the first time the class is offered for the student’s program. You will not need to match courses credit-per-credit. Rather, you must have obtained more than half of the credits required at GW Law. For example, GW Law requires four credits for Contracts. If your original law school required only three credits of Contracts, you nevertheless will have satisfied our requirement for Contracts. For information on GW Law's graduation requirements, please see the Academic & Course Advising website.

Once you have submitted your deposit, you may contact the Dean of Students Office at [email protected]. After receipt and review of an official transcript, that office will determine the number of credits the law school will accept for each of the courses you successfully completed in your first year. Before orientation, you will be provided with a Transfer Credit Memo (TCM) indicating the GW Law courses satisfied, any required course enrollments, and your remaining graduation requirements. The Dean of Students Office will notify you of opportunities during orientation for academic advising.

Recognizing that transfer students may have pending credit due to summer coursework at their original institution, the deadline for submitting a complete, final official transcript is October 15, 2024. A complete, final official transcript must be submitted in order to finalize your admissions file and to ensure all qualifying credits transfer. Please have your official transcript sent to the Admissions Office ([email protected]). Once received, the Admissions Office will share your final transcript with the Dean of Students Office to review and make any revisions to your TCM as appropriate.

Securing Your Seat in the Fall 2024 Class

Option 1: Submit a Commitment Form

You may choose to reserve your seat at GW Law by submitting a binding commitment form (which requires no payment). The Commitment Form was attached to your admission notification. If you have questions, please email the Admissions Office at [email protected].

Option 2: Pay a Seat Deposit

The deposit payment deadline was provided in your admission notification. You may pay your deposit online via the GWeb Information System. Registration Information

Please review the Fall 2024 course selection information (including a schedule of classes, exam schedule, and list of closed classes) on the Records Office webpage. Registration will open on Friday, August 23, 2024.

In order to register for the courses, you select, you must:

  1. Submit either the commitment form or the required deposit by the due date as outlined in your admission email. Your student record and student account, which allow you to register for classes, will be created once the deposit/signed commitment form has been received.
  2. Select your courses for the Fall semester. Please see the Dean of Students Academic Advising webpage for an overview of graduation requirements. If you would like additional guidance regarding course selection, please contact our Dean of Students Office at (202) 994-8320 or [email protected]
  3. The GWeb online registration system will be opened on August 23. Please note that if you register prior to obtaining your Transfer Credit Memo (TCM), you may be required to modify your schedule to include any required first-year courses. First-year classes for
the Fall 2024 term will begin on Monday, August 19. Upper-level classes for the Fall 2024 term begin on Monday, August 26. The Add/Drop period will open from August 23 - September 3, 2024.
  4. Instructions for registering for classes using GWeb:
    • Your User ID for GWeb registration is your GWid. Your GWid is the uppercase letter “G” followed by an 8-digit number. To retrieve your GWid, you can do so via the GWid Retrieval Request Form and select the “SSN + Date of Birth” retrieval method.
    • To register, go to the MyGW Portal and select “gweb info system.”
    • Contact the Records Office (open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., (202) 994-6261 or e-mail at [email protected]) if you have any problems completing online registration.

When planning your class schedule, take heed of the exam schedule on the web. The Law School has a strict policy regarding final exams. Final exams cannot be rescheduled and students are not permitted to take two classes with final exams at the same time. Therefore, you should select classes with the exam schedule in mind. Students can have two exams in one day, although this is not advisable. Exams on
successive days are not uncommon. There are no pre-scheduled “make-up days” for exams. Please note that due to the high number of ungraded courses that will already be reflected on your transcript, you will be permitted a maximum of eight (8) total ungraded credits beyond the number of credit hours transferred to GW Law from your prior institution.

Ungraded credits, GW Law’s version of pass/fail, are referred to as Credit/No Credit(CR/NC). Courses evaluated with Honors/Pass/Low Pass/No Credit are also considered ungraded courses. You may take any number of CR/NC courses including, but not limited to clinics, field placements, or moot court competitions up to the 8 CR/NC limit. You may not, however, convert a regularly graded course to CR/NC given the high number of ungraded courses that will have transferred to your GW Law transcript— regardless of the number. Transfer students typically enter with 24 or more ungraded credits, well beyond the 17 CR/NCs permitted for law students matriculating as 1Ls. Given this limitation, you should be judicious about which CR/NC courses you choose.

Tuition & Fees

Tuition and fees for the 2024-2025 academic year are $72,520 per year ($36,260 per semester) for full-time study or $2,548 per credit hour for part-time study (up to a maximum of 11 credits per semester).

Transfer students are eligible for financial aid through GW Law in the form of loans only. You may contact the Law Financial Aid Office at [email protected] or (202) 994-6592.

Tuition Insurance

A law student’s success depends on their physical and mental health. At GW, we have support systems in place to support a student’s well-being including our CARE Network and Colonial Health Center’s various services. On occasion, however, a student may need to leave the law school before the semester is complete. To mitigate the financial impact of such an occurrence, the University offers the Tuition Refund Plan, administered by A.W.G. Dewar, for your consideration. This plan is offered to protect your educational investment in the event of a medical or mental health withdrawal. The plan significantly extends and enhances GW’s published refund policy as stated in the Law Bulletin. The deadline for purchasing tuition insurance is COB August 21, 2024. We strongly encourage you to protect your educational investment. For more information, please visit GW's tuition insurance website.

Orientation

Orientation for students transferring into the law school is mandatory and will be held on August 13 -14. Information about orientation and opportunities for academic advising during orientation will be forthcoming.

Notebook Computer Requirement

All students are expected to have a personal notebook computer that meets the specifications for Exam4, the exam software used to administer exams. Please note that Chromebooks and iPad Pros will not suffice. Computer specifications can be found on the Exam4 site. If you determine that you need to purchase a new notebook computer, please note that you may be able to obtain an increase in your financial aid budget for this purpose.

Honors Information

Transfer students are eligible for all academic honors and awards conferred by GW Law.

Journal Participation

Membership on a journal at the law school from which you are transferring does not guarantee you a place on one of the journals at GW Law. Transfer students are eligible to write onto one of our journals in accordance with each journal’s policy regarding transfer students. The transfer writing competition will be held from August 15 at 9:00 AM to August 19 at 9:00 AM. The law school will provide further information regarding the Transfer Journal Competition once it becomes available.

Field Placement Program

Transfer students are encouraged to participate in the Field Placement Program! In the Field Placement Program, students earn academic credit for externships with government, judicial, or nonprofit organizations.

The Program provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in different substantive areas of law and legal processes; to provide students with the opportunity to gain experience in different substantive areas of law and legal process and reflect upon their professional development; to develop legal research, writing, interviewing, counseling, and investigative skills and engage in reflective lawyering; to deal with issues of professional responsibility in a practice setting and give thought to an attorney’s ethical and moral choices and obligations; and to consider cross-cultural competency within the context of client representation and an attorney's role in creating a legal system providing equal access and eliminating bias, discrimination, and racism in the law.

Registration for the Fall 2024 Field Placement Program opens on Friday, June 28, 2024, and the priority registration deadline is Friday, August 2, 2024. We encourage students to apply as soon as possible to ensure a spot; however, we will admit students into the Program as space allows until September 3, 2024

To participate in Field Placement, students must do the following:

  1. Secure a qualifying externship - We encourage students to work closely with the Career Development Office to identify externship opportunities that align with their professional goals.
  2. Submit the registration application - Once an externship is secured, students must complete the registration application. This is done by creating a “New Experience” in the Experiential Learning section of CORE. Additionally, once the New Experience has been submitted, students must complete the COVID-19 Assumption of Risk, Release, and Waiver of Liability and their placement supervisors must complete the Student Extern Supervision Agreement, both found in the “Documents and Forms” tab of the Experience. Complete instructions for the registration process can be found on the Field Placement page of MyLaw. The Fall 2024 semester will be activated on Friday, June 28, 2024.
  3. Attend a required orientation session - All first‐time Field Placement participants must attend an orientation session. The orientation will last 90 minutes and multiple sessions are offered during the first week of class. Specific dates and times will be sent to all first-time Field Placement participants approximately two weeks before the start of classes.

If you have any questions, please contact the Field Placement team at [email protected]

Disclosure Information

It is critically important for you to have a complete and accurate law school application, including the disclosure of any legal violations, college disciplinary matters, or similar issues.

State boards of bar examiners will note any issue you disclose to them on your bar application that occurred before you enrolled at GW Law (or any law school), and specifically ask us at the Law School whether we knew about that issue when you enrolled. If an inconsistency exists between your bar application/information obtained by the bar examiners and your law school admission application, it could potentially impact your admission to the bar of that state.

Please err on the side of disclosure.

Transfer Resume Form

Please submit this Transfer Resume Form by July 15. In lieu of your resume, this form is designed to capture all the notable and fun facts about our incoming students. This is your opportunity to share both accomplishments and interesting tidbits. We love learning more about our incoming students, and we encourage you to share and shine!

Law and Undergraduate Transcripts

If you elect to enroll at GW Law and have not already done so, please have your current law school send a final official law transcript that includes all Spring 2024 law grades (and Summer 2024 grades, if applicable). In addition, we require an undergraduate transcript (with bachelor’s degree notation).

Official law transcripts can be submitted electronically to [email protected] via a transcript electronic service (recommended).

If an electronic option is not available, official transcripts can be mailed directly to the Admissions Office:

The George Washington University Law School
JD Admissions Office
700 20th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20052

Recognizing that transfer students may have pending credit for coursework at their original institution due to summer courses, the deadline for submitting a complete, final official transcript from your prior institution, is October 15, 2024. A complete, final official transcript must be submitted in order to finalize your Admissions file and to ensure all qualifying credits transfer. If your official transcripts are not received, a registration hold will be placed on your account.

Health Insurance and Immunization Requirements

The District of Columbia Immunization Law requires that all students under age 26 provide proof of immunizations prior to registration or they will incur a registration hold on their student account. If you will be under the age of 26 as of July 1, 2024, you must submit immunization records directly to the Student Health Center through the student health portal. The deadline is July 15, 2024. Should you have any questions, please email Student Health Services at [email protected] or call 202-994-5300 option #3.

Covid-19 vaccination - The university strongly recommends but does not require vaccination for all community members. We urge everyone to stay up to date with the latest booster or new vaccination recommendations from the CDC. Community members do not need to upload vaccine documentation. Members of our community should continue to follow guidance from the CDC regarding isolation, testing, masking, vaccination, and symptom monitoring, especially in cases of a positive COVID-19 test. Following this guidance helps to protect all members of our community, including those who may be at higher risk for complications.

Health Insurance - All undergraduate, graduate, law, medical, and doctoral students, who are matriculated in a degree-granting on-campus program and all international students on a J1 or F1 Visa are required to have health insurance while they study at GW. This includes students on the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, VSTC, and Corcoran campuses.  These students will be automatically charged and enrolled in the GW SHIP and must submit a waiver form if they have another insurance plan that meets the required waiver criteria. For information on health insurance offered through the University, students should visit the Student Health Center

The Student Health Center is located in the University Student Center at:

800 21st Street, NW
Ground Floor
Washington, DC 20052

Phone: (202) 994-5300
Fax: (202) 912-8488
https://healthcenter.gwu.edu/

Your student account will incur a registration hold if complete immunization records are not received by Student Health Services.

Housing

Washington, DC, has been called the most livable city on the East Coast. Museums -- mostly free! -- pepper the city, and all are accessible by foot or Metro from the Law School. With the National Mall and the vast Rock Creek Park near campus, students may take advantage of abundant green space for running, biking, strolling, or sports such as softball and volleyball. The city is busy and energetic, but also easy to get around and replete with opportunities for socializing and relaxation.

Housing options vary throughout neighborhoods in DC, Virginia, and Maryland. By survey responses to VeryApt, students have created a housing guide that may be a great resource for you. The guide describes neighborhoods and specific buildings throughout the DC area: 2024 GW Law Off-Campus Housing Guide

You may also access the GW Law Housing Portal where admitted students can ask housing questions, find roommates, and interact with the housing guide. All you need is an email address to create an account.

Students with Disabilities

Any student seeking information about campus accessibility or accommodation on the basis of a disability should direct inquiries to The George Washington University’s Disability Support Services (DSS) office at 202‐994‐8250 (voice or TDD). The University and the Law School have a system to address a law student’s requests for accommodation. For additional information on accommodations at the Law School, please refer to the Law School Dean of Students website. After submitting a registration form and supporting documentation to DSS, we ask any entering law student requesting an accommodation to notify the Law School Dean of Students Office ([email protected]) as soon as possible in order to coordinate support services to meet the student’s needs.

DSS accepts and reviews registrations, requests for accommodation, and supporting documentation at any time of the year.  However, to ensure that sufficient time is provided for DSS to complete its review process and for the Law School to implement the approved accommodations, students should submit requests and supporting documentation for accommodations to DSS, at least three (3) weeks before they need the accommodation to be implemented and at least four (4) weeks for exam-related accommodations.

The University will make every effort to complete its review of requests for accommodations that are submitted outside of these time frames.  However, if the request and supporting documentation are submitted outside these time frames, it cannot guarantee that the review will be completed or that the approved accommodation can be implemented in time for class or an upcoming exam.  Students should plan accordingly and submit their requests and documentation as early as possible.

Our counselors have expertise in many areas of employment in the private and public sectors, including law firms of all sizes, international and domestic corporations, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and judicial clerkships in federal and state courts. The CDO also offers counseling services for current JD students and JD alumni from the most recent graduating class.

The GW Law Summer Recruiting Program and New York Interview Program will take place virtually from July 29 to August 1, 2024.  Information about the 2024 Recruitment Program Dates and Bidding deadlines was sent to you via email.

Transfer students who have paid their seat deposits will have access to the Career Development Office’s jobs database (CORE), beginning on June 6, 2024. Instructions for using CORE and all communications from the CDO will only be sent to law school email addresses, which will be assigned to students after June 6, 2024, or when students have paid their seat deposits and are fully enrolled by the University. Students who pay their seat deposit after June 18, 2024, will not be eligible to participate in the New York Interview Program or GW Law Summer Recruiting Program. The bidding deadline for these two programs is June 27, 2024. Should you need to contact the Career Office, please email [email protected] or call 202.994.7340.

All emails from the Career Development Office will be sent to your GW Law email account so be sure to check your GW Law email for all recruiting‐related information.

Admitted transfer students are strongly encouraged to pay the deposit as early as possible if they plan to participate in GW Law's recruitment programs. Upon paying the deposit, students will receive access to the Career Development Office's online recruiting platform and counseling services. Students are responsible for monitoring email throughout the school year and summer to ensure that they receive all communications from the Career Development Office.
